Dr. Doreen Feula

How can rehabilitation and physical therapy improve the health and well-being of my dog?

Rehabilitation and physical therapy can lead to faster healing for post-surgical or injury cases. It also helps decrease pain, increase mobility, and boost endurance, which is especially beneficial for athletic dogs.

What are some injuries that would benefit from rehabilitation and physical therapy?

We recommend physical therapy and rehabilitation for orthopedic or neurologic injuries, whether pre or post-operative. It is also beneficial for arthritis cases as it helps decrease pain and increase mobility. Additionally, we offer rehab for overweight patients to help prevent injuries and aid in weight loss , even though being overweight isn't an injury per se.

How will a veterinarian decide if rehabilitation and physical therapy is right for my dog?

In our practice, we conduct a full consultation to determine if a patient is a candidate for rehab. This may include taking x-rays or reviewing x-rays and history from another clinic. I perform a full exam, including a neuro exam and gait analysis, among other assessments, to identify the pain, diagnose the issue, and determine the appropriate course of action. Then, I create a personalized program for the individual patient.

Why is it important to consult a vet early on if I notice pain or mobility problems in my dog?

We know you don't want your dog to remain in pain, so the sooner you come to us, the better because we can make them feel better. You don't want them to injure anything worse than it already is. And typically, the longer they're injured, the longer it takes for them to get better. So, it is important to just get them in, get them taken care of, and make everybody happy.

Will I be able to help my dog rehabilitate with physical therapy at home?

Yes, we provide exercises that you can do at home with your pet. We offer videos and work with you to teach you how to perform them, allowing you and your pet to easily continue progress between visits to us.
